Which slab do 500 units fall in?
500 units fall in the 401 to 500 unit slab: Rs 38.95 a unit and a fixed charge of Rs 500 per kW for an un-protected home. Un-protected homes pay one rate on every unit of the month, set by the slab the total falls in.
There is no protected rate above 200 units. A 500-unit month is billed at un-protected rates, and a home that was protected loses that status until it has six months in a row at 200 units or less.
How close is 500 to the next slab?
500 units is the top of the 401 to 500 slab, so one more unit moves the whole month to Rs 40.22 a unit. For a 1 kW un-protected home, 501 units would cost about Rs 1,030 more than 500.

What else changes a 500-unit bill?
Your sanctioned load, the month the fuel adjustment was based on, and your tax status can all move the bill away from this estimate.
- Sanctioned load. The fixed charge is Rs 500 for each kW at this slab, so a 2 kW home pays about Rs 27,949 in all. See MEPCO fixed charges per kW.
- The fuel adjustment. It is charged on the units of an earlier month, not this one. This month's rate is on MEPCO fuel and quarterly adjustments.
- The debt servicing surcharge. Rs 3.23 a unit for un-protected homes and Rs 0.43 for protected ones, under NEPRA's decision of 30 March 2023.
- Income tax. A home bill of Rs 25,000 or more carries 7.5% income tax when the consumer is not on FBR's Active Taxpayers List. See taxes on a MEPCO bill.
